Literacy and the Digital Classroom

For 35 years, Gayle has taught K–2, Title 1, and gifted clustered students in Becker, Minnesota. Her students use technology daily and enjoy using their class Web site for Internet inquiries, to display their work, and to communicate with their parents. As a consultant and trainer for the past 15 years, Gayle has helped teachers throughout the nation learn about technology, the Internet, and creative ways to use both in the classroom. As a researcher and developer for the Minnesota Teacher Network, she works to help other teachers throughout the state communicate and learn online.

Gayle has received numerous recognitions for innovative teaching including Scholastic.com Grade 1-2 Teacher Mentor in 2004, Apple Distinguished Educator in 2001, Classroom Connect's Internet Educator of the Year 2002 — Central Region, Inspiration Software's Scholarship for Visual Learning, the USWest/NEA Minnesota Teacher Network Award, and Becker School District Teacher of the Year.

Gayle shared LOTS of publishing ideas for primary ages which can be changed to meet the needs of older students.

The new website enables teachers, librarians, and parents to search a database of over 50,000 books to find the right match for every child, according to reading level, interest, subject, and genre. Teachers and librarians can also download free lesson plans related to specific books and purchase many titles at teacher discounted prices through Scholastic.com’s Teacher Store.
